We recently had a chat with Siobhan from carpet flooring specialists, Milliken-Ontera.
Introducing Milliken-Ontera
As stated on the website, “Milliken-Ontera is a design leader and manufacturer in commercial flooring, with a 30-year history throughout the Australian and New Zealand markets.” Based in Sydney, Milliken’s expertise covers design, manufacturing and supply and is dedicated to creating unique and inspirational interior spaces.
Design
Milliken-Ontera have perfected the art of creating custom carpet tiles for projects of any size or complexity with a simplified four step process of CONCEPT, DESIGN, REFINE and PRODUCE. After collaborating with the design team in Sydney, carpet samples can be created in just four days and carpet delivered within three weeks of being ordered. Clients can design anything under the sun, “from tartan to pink leopard print” or make changes to any of the samples on the portfolio.
When querying Siobhan on design trends for 2022, she said that Indigenous design was becoming very popular but Milliken has been ahead of the game for a while, having a partnership with Indigenous artist Brentyn Lugnan. Lugnan has designed a whole collection exclusively for Milliken and it is ‘absolutely spectacular.’

Projects
Discussing recent stand out projects, Siobhan highlighted their involvement in the new Red Cross head office in Adelaide. Quoting Richard Simmons from Liquid Design, he said
“The product was put forward because of the quality that Milliken-Ontera provides and also the environmental aspect of the carpet tiles. The colourway was new and pushed Red Cross out of their comfort zone as it hasn’t been done before. We know that this project was the first test case for all other projects, so we wanted to provide a design and colour selection that would last and can be subtly changed within other states and buildings, but while still keeping the overall design intent.”
The flooring compliments the Indigenous artwork chosen by the designer and as quoted, pushed the Red Cross out of its comfort zone; mixing things up from its usual grey tones to a more vibrant blue pattern. Since this happened, another five Red Cross head offices have been rolled out across Australia, following the lead of the SA office.
Sustainability
With 100+ years of heritage, Milliken-Ontera strives to positively impact the world for generations to come by following a REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE methodology. Milliken recently launched the M/PACT carbon neutral program that supports renewable energy and carbon reduction technologies to help fight climate change.
“We are committed to strive for a goal of zero waste generation to all media – land, air, water – to be achieved by continual improvement in all our operations. This goal will guide the conduct of our manufacturing operations, the development of new products, and our interaction with our suppliers and customers. Recycling of materials is an integral part of this on-going effort.”
